My NaNoWriMo 2019 Project

Like I've said before, this is my first NaNoWriMo that I've ever participated in. I've gone through my different story ideas to see which one would be best to expand on and turn into a novel. At first I thought I would do a fantasy story that I've been working on for the last few months. But I hit a snag with that story and it's currently on the back burner. After that fell through, I looked through my other ideas and I landed on one that I wanted to try.
The working title for this project is "Mine to Own", but I'll refer to it mostly as Project Arizona, since that's where the story takes place. This story is a little bit different from any other novel idea I've had before. Most of the time, if I have an idea for a novel, that is the context in which I will come up with scenes. However with "Mine to Own", it originated as a screenplay idea. I've been writing in screenplay format much longer than novel format. With screenplays, they're less descriptive and while development is important, not as much time can be dedicated to it as one can do in a novel. Screenplays are meant to aid visuals, not paint them. Novels, however, are the complete opposite. So for Project Arizona, I had to figure out how to translate this idea from the screenplay form it originated in to a format I felt completely lost in. I'll talk more about that as well as my prep has been going in another post (coming soon). For now, I'm going to tell you all a little bit about "Mine to Own".
So not only is this story a different format from its original structure, it's also a genre that for the longest time I was not a fan of, and a genre that I don't see many books written in.
It's a Western.
Yeah, not a popular novel genre, that's for sure. And I have to say it's ironic for me because I did not like Westerns as a kid. We had a lot of old Western movies and I got bored pretty quickly about how repetitive they were. No movie I watched offered something new to the Western genre. And then everything changed when I saw a movie called "3:10 to Yuma". That movie is now in my top ten favorite films of all times. It was the most refreshing movie I've ever seen, and it inspired my to watch other recent Westerns. Gone were the stereotypical heroes and villains of old. In their place stood real, complex relationships between characters and their environment. I fell in love with the Western genre, and combined with my love of Arizona, it inspired me to create my own story. So here we are. For NaNoWriMo 2019, Project Arizona will be my main focus. Is it a story I can get 50,000 words out of? I think now that I've plotted it out more, yes, it is, maybe even more that 50,000. Could it be less? Absolutely. But I won't know until I start. And with that in mind, I can't wait until November 1st!

P.S. If anyone has any recommendations for books that take place in the Wild West, please leave me a comment and let me know. I really want to read some and don't know where to begin.
